Saddleback, Endemic, Near-threatened.
Another beautiful New Zealand endemic bird, belonging to the same family as the Kokako. It has 2 sub-species: this is the North Island Saddleback, sub-species P.c.rufusater. Both sub-species now only exist on islands where they have been successfully reintroduced following eradication of mammalian predators (New Zealand has a LOT of introduced predators that have devastated the local wildlife).
They are very common on Tiritiri Matangi, and can be seen eating the pollen and sap of flax (quite often seen with yellow pollen on the foreheads).
