Just back from a quick trip across to New Zealand. One of the highlights was a visit to Tiritiri Matangi Island, just north of Auckland. This is a success story in the making. The island has been revegetated over the last 30 years and all predators removed, making it ideal for the re-introduction of many New Zealand native birds, like this Kokako.
There are only about 16 birds on the island, and we were lucky to see 2. This particular bird was calling in a tree out of sight above us, and we were just about to give up on seeing it when it flew straight down and starting munching on leaves less than 5 metres away!
The North Island Kokako (also known as the Blue-wattled Crow) is rare now on the mainland, barely surviving in small patches of native veg here and there, and the South Island Kokako (aka the Orange-wattled Crow) is presumed extinct.
