Although called the Pygmy Amazon in German, the Rusty-faced Parrot shares the genus Hapalopsittaca with the Black-winged Parrot of Peru and Bolovia, the critically endangered Fuertes's Parrot of Colombia, and the Red-faced Parrot of south Ecuador and north Peru.
