This species has the longest crest of any Turaco. It is mainly found in central Angola, Zambia, the southern DRC but also extends its range north along riparian forest in Tanzania and southern Kenya.
Uniquely amongst birds the red wing feather pigment is a substance called Turacin. Unlike other birds this red colouration is derived from copper complexed to a uroporphyrin rather than derived from caretenoids.
