A member of the warbler family this species arrives in Ireland from March onwards and remains until September/October. In recent years more are overwintering in Ireland, largely in the south. It's onomatopoeic song of 'chiff-chaff, chiff-chaff..' is probably more familiar than the bird itself as it spends most of it's time in the treetops. The collybita part of the scientific name derives from the Greek for money-changer; the song being similar to the chinking of coins being counted. This one was photographed in my back garden last September.
