At the time I was using a Quantaray generic Flash with none of the extended Flash modes supported by the Canon flashes. So the only option I had was to shoot 1/200 in manual or shutter-priority mode, as that is the fastest shutter speed the flash supports. Normally this gives a slightly blurred look to the wings (which can be good or bad), but in this case I must have caught the wings stopping for a microsecond to change directions.
