After being split from P. leucotis, it became the most endangered parakeet in South America. While it was perhaps formerly more widespread, it is currently only known from the Serra de Baturit� mountains of northeastern Brazil.
Similar to the [Maroon-bellied Parakeet] of the Atlantic rain forest in Brazil, and currently only being recorded in the Serra de Baturit� mountains of northeastern Brazil ({Athanas}).
