One of the largest owls in the Atlantic. Endemic species in Southeastern Brazil and the habit remains very territorial during the day on top of trees.
It has a facial disc brown, ocher and white eyebrows around the nozzle. It has dark brown back and tail with white cross bands. It has a wide collar of the same color and the belly is light ocher (giving rise to its common name).
