Male Sparrowhawk immediately after a successful swoop on a mixed flock of small birds who were busily feeding on spilt grain. The Sparrowhawk is a specialist feeder on small birds and relies on stealth and acceleration to catch prey. It uses any available cover to mask approaches toward intended targets. In this case I was watching the feeding birds in the lee of a hedge when the Sparrowhawk materialised in a blur of intent from over the top, stopped all forward momentum and swooped downward before seizing its prey. I can't say if the luckless House Sparrow was the first or last bird to react to the threat and rise such was the panic generated. The unfortunate prey was taken to a nearby wood for plucking and consumption.
