Adult bird in winter plumage. This species began breeding in Ireland in recent years. The small breeding population is augmented by winter visitors from continental Europe. Ringing data indicates Belgium and Holland as sources for birds wintering on the Dublin coast.

Very similar to [Black-headed Gull] but note slightly smaller size, and no black in tail. Found along Mediterranean coast and on the Atlantic ocean from France to northwest Africa, and the Black Sea has a large population.
