Ivy (Hedera helix) is not the favourite plant of a lot of people who obsess about tidiness. Straggly, rampant and vigourous as it is, it might be hard to love for some. However it is one of the few that flowers in our colder months and provides much needed nectar to a variety of insects on the wing at these times. Similarly it berries in the Spring and provides an early harvest for birds - such as this female Blackcap gorging herself today.
