The commonest and default finch across much of Europe. Finch, I recently found out, is German in origin, is pronounced 'Fink' and is a rendering of the usual call of this species. The scientific name tranlates as Bachelor Finch and was given because of this species' tendency to migrate in single-sex flocks. I think I need to get out a bit more at this stage!
