This species breeds from central Europe eastwards across Siberia to the Kamchatka Peninsula. This male was photographed in a dried up river bed in Lesvos as it fed on invertebrates among the stones - a change from its usual treetop habitat. Thunderstorms the evening before had led to a 'fall' of migrants on the west coast of the island and in the same general area as this flycatcher there were at a couple of hundred shrikes (mainly Red-backed but Lesser Grey and Masked also); Orphean Warblers; Rollers; Golden Orioles; Icterine Warblers; 30 Black-headed Buntings in the same tree as well as lone Barred Warbler and Nightjar.
