This species was not discovered until 2018, and is critically endangered. Ours was the first birding tour group to see it. We are hoping that future income from birding tourists will motivate the local landowners to preserve the few small patches of its habitat that have not yet been converted to pastureland.
A new species discovered in 2018. Compare to [Ecuadorian Hillstar] but note ultramarine blue throat. Found in southwest Ecuador at 3,700 meters on east and west slope. A few hundred individuals are believed to exist.
