This "extreme endemic" from Peru was a key target species. Described only in 1986, until 1990s it was only known from a few sightings. Now its considered locally common in the right habitat within its range but that range is very small (mid-elevation montane forest in the Rio Mayo drainage) and the habitat is under increasing threat from coffee, other agriculture, timber felling, road building etc., so its likely to retain its unfortunate Endangered status. Its a had bird to see since it tends to stay high up in the canopy. There are only about 4 pictures on the web per Google and only a couple on flickr, so I am posting these record shots here. This was after a punishing (and yes, muddy) hike on a ridge outside Moyobamba, the rapidly growing capital of the San Martin province. Peru, Aug 2, 2015.
