This impressive Aracari can be found from Colombia and Ecuador eastwards through northern Bolivia and Brazil. It is a bird primarily of Amazonian forest. Most often we saw and heard this species as it flew over the canopy. Only occasionally did we see it perched. This was one of a small group seen in varzea on the edge of the Rio Beni near Riberalta in NE Bolivia.
This species has two forms, sometimes considered different species. Humboldt's Aracari, found in the Andean foothills from Colombia to Bolivia as well as the western Amazon basin, has an all black lower {mandible}.
