The species belongs to the monotypic genus Micropygia.
Although not considered rare, they are extremely shy and elusive and thus very difficult to be spotted.
Its natural habitats are dry savanna and subtropical or tropical seasonally wet or flooded lowland grassland.
Known in Brazil as "maxalalagá".
