Note slightly {decurved} thin bill. The male has a light blue gorget bordered with violet on the bottom. Smaller in size and with a smaller thinner bill than the Oasis Hummingbird but has similar coloration and occupies similar dry habitat. This species is the only one in its genus and {HBW} writes scientists are not sure of its taxonomic relation to other woodstars.
