An uncommon flycatcher of open areas above treeline and paramo vegetation, that feeds on ground with thrush-like hops and jumps, running through barren and rocky areas. Found alone or in pairs between 3300-4200m at the Eastern & Central Andes of Colombia, south into Chile & Argentina.
