(Best) 4 of 5 Pelagic Cormorant (Phalacrocorax pelagicus) on rock bordering Morro Bay Harbor, Morro Bay, CA. 19 Oct. 2008. Michael "Mike" L. Baird, Canon 1D Mark III 70-200mm IS f/2.8 handheld. To get this photo I had to slowly make my way close, and slither down the embankment's boulders at water's edge, both to get closer, and to achieve a "same-eye-level" view, while also removing distracting background elements from the field of view.. This is probably the best quality of the 5 photos in this bunch.
EDITOR: There is some confusion about this species. IOC says it is Leucocarbo pelagicus (Pelagic Shag).
