This tiny wee owl (only 16cm tall and weighing 57g) is Africa's smallest and rarest owl with its core population based in the Cynometra-Manikara forest zone within the Arabuko-Sokoke forest. There are small, barely viable populations in Dakatcha and in Tanzania's Eastern Usambara's. The species is Red Data listed as "Endangered" with a decreasing population currently estimated to be between 2,500 and 9,900 individuals. A nest has never been found and much of this rare owl's biology remains to be discovered.
These charming wee owls come in three flavours (colour morphs): Grey, Rufous ("Red") and Orange.
