Apologies for the poor quality of the image (which was taken in rather low forest light) but I don't suppose I will ever see anything quite like this again.
The bird is an African Crowned Eagle -Africa's most powerful eagle. This individual is a massive female who had just caught herself a forest antelope. I am not certain as to which small antelope this is and initially assumed it to be a Suni however the facial pattern, pelt colour and plump body-build all suggested that the prey may in fact be a Harvey's Duiker -a small stocky forest antelope which stands about 40cm tall at the shoulder and weighs up to 15kg. The antelope's skull had been partially crushed by the force of her massive talons and she very effectively opened up the cranium and consumed the contents while we watched!
Rather bizarrely this sighting was in Kenya's Nairobi National Park (in a forested gully containing a small rocky stream within an area of remnant forest). It is encouraging that such a large and powerful forest eagle as this can still be found ony a few kilometres from one of Africa's largest cities!
