This rather scarce Snake Eagle is restricted to coastal forest from Kenya south through Tanzania and Mozambique into north-east South Africa. Small populations also exist in forested areas of Zimbabwe and Zambia.
This species of Circaetus eagle is an ambush hunter preferring to hunt from a concealed perch in the subcanopy unlike most other Snake Eagles which hunt on the wing or from prominent perches in sparsely wooded country.
