The Black Heron (Black Egret) is renowned for its novel and spectacular fishing technique. It creates a shady canopy with its wings whilst the head is tucked underneath. The bird stirs the sediment with its yellow feet and snaps up any small fish that break cover.
It may be that the canopy simply reduces overhead glare but it is also possible that the deep shade created draws in small fish.
