Newtonias belong to the Vangidae (Vangas) family, one of the five Madagascar endemic families (the others being ground-rollers, Cuckoo-Roller, mesites, Malagasy Warblers). The Vangidae consist of as disparate a group of birds as you're ever likely to see! All quite different from each other, and no doubt having evolved under isolated island conditions over many millions of years, each sub-group has evolved to fill niches not already taken by other species. We saw lots of representatives of this family, and many of the small Newtonias, which are only about 12 cm in length. Compare this Common Newtonia with the Archbold's Newtonia, a less common species. It lacks the reddish/darker head and upperparts.
