A classic warbler of Mediterranean regions this species belongs, with some other Sylvia warblers, to a loose group often referred to as 'scrub' warblers due to their habitat preference of dry and scrubby terrain. Usually found skulking in the middle of a thorn bush this individual obligingly popped out on to the barbed-wire fence and gave a snatch of song. This species, though breeding only in southern Europe, occurs most years in Ireland - including singing males in Spring in recent years.
