| The beetle with headlights |
I was sitting along in a jungle lodge in western Ecuador processing photos on my laptop when a beetle approached me. Not just any beetle; this beetle had illuminated eyes like orange LED’s. I was awestruck, and as I tried to figure out how to take a photo, the beetle moved into the shadows and his eyes went out. I thought maybe it had somehow temporarily absorbed the light in my area, but moments later the beetle turned its eyes back on and like some demonic creature started walking towards me.
The next morning I encountered another first for me, the Hummingbird Moth. This moth has developed a long thin proboscus, and flies from flower to flower drinking nectar exactly like a hummingbird. I am sure that many people who have seen it thought they saw a tiny hummingbird.
Ecuador and tropical forests in general are places of great biodiversity, with many thousands of amazing plants and animals, each with their own unique adaptations. The miracle of life could not be any more evident than in these forests, yet people continue to cut and burn the forests and plant cow grass. They build churches and worship a god after destroying his creation. Did god create the LED beetle and Hummingbird Moth so that man could destroy it?
