Cecropia

Cecropia trees are common in tropical latin America, and I´ve heard of them referred to as the ´fast food of the jungle´ for birds and animals. Indeed the trees seem to always have fruit. Much of the birdwatching at the Canopy Tower in Panama comes from the adjacent cecropia trees. Finally I found a tree where I could reach the fruit, and can report that it is indeed very edible. It is starchy and flavorless, like a raw potato, but has a nice slightly crunchy texture. I imagine that being starchy, it is high in calories.
